COVENTRY — When Vernon resident Wayne Lumpkin learned that Coventry would be honoring local Vietnam War-era veterans at a ceremony on Monday night, he knew he had to be there.
“I saw it said Vietnam veterans get an award. I had to turn the TV back just to make sure I heard what I heard. So I came up here,” Lumpkin said. “It said Vietnam. I’m here.”
About 50 veterans, including Lumpkin, were given awards of recognition for their service during the presentation at Coventry High School. In attendance were several state and local officials, including Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, Veterans Affairs Office of Advocacy and Assistance Manager John Carragher, Sen. Jeff Gordon, R-Woodstock, Rep. Tim Ackert, R-Coventry, Town Manager John Elsesser, and Town Council Chairwoman Lisa Thomas.
