Uncle Mu’s international commentary is to analyze the so-called “laser incident” between China and the Philippines surrounding the disputes over islands and reefs in the South China Sea.
Similar to the American attention to the balloon incident, in the past few days, Philippine officials and the media have been paying attention to another unexpected incident. This is the confrontation between the coast guards of the two countries near the islands and reefs in the South China Sea, resulting in a laser incident.
The Philippines has accused the Chinese coast guard ship of irradiating the crew of the Philippine coast guard ship with military-grade lasers, causing temporary blindness. As a result, the Philippine president also summoned the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines.
But Uncle Mu noticed that the Chinese side refuted the rumors of the Philippines.
On February 16, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that things were not as the Philippines said. Instead, the Philippine coast guard ship broke into the waters near Ren’ai Reef, which China owns sovereignty. China took measures to warn it in accordance with the law, including using hand-held laser speedometers and green light stylus to ensure the safety of navigation on the spot.
We emphasize that no laser was used to irradiate the Filipino crew, and the accusation by the Philippine side is not true.
Uncle Mu noticed that in order to ease the situation, China has made some gestures towards the Philippines.
For example, our ambassador to the Philippines not only clarified the facts to the President of the Philippines, but also paid a special visit to the Chief of Staff of the Philippine Army to clarify the facts and introduce the situation to him.
The ambassador later posted on social media that the two sides had friendly and constructive talks, discussing issues of military exchanges and cooperation and maintaining regional peace and stability.
Judging from the released photos, the attitudes of both parties are moderate and have not been affected in any way. This shows that the ambassador’s work is effective. China and the Philippines maintain close communication channels. The so-called laser incident will not have long-term effects and will cool down soon.
But one risk is that-
Many Western countries have recently expressed their support for the Philippines intensively: this is not only the United States publicly claiming to “stand with its Philippine allies”, but also the diplomatic agencies of the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia and other countries have expressed their support for the Philippines.
However, if the Philippines, with the support of the West, insists on its own views on issues related to the South China Sea, it may cause related incidents to become complicated.
