Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – The Industry Ministry’s Center for Standardization and Services of the Handicraft and Batik Industry (BBSPJIKB) stated that the jewelry industry is one of the superior sectors in Indonesia and other countries in ASEAN.
Acting Head of BBSPJIKB Hagung Eko Pawowo noted here on Monday that the total weight of jewelry demand in 2022 in ASEAN countries had reached 77.8 tons.
“This amount is three times greater than the demand for jewelry in Hong Kong that reached 22.4 tons,” Pawowo remarked at the Jewelry Design and Marketing Training for ASEAN-Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
The event was held by BBSPJIKB in Yogyakarta as part of the ASEAN Free Trade Area agreement.
According to Pawowo, the jewelry industry in ASEAN countries has been developing for quite a long time.
He explained that Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia have a longstanding history in jewelry production and have skilled jewelry artisans.
However, he said, the jewelry industry in the region, which is dominated by small and medium industries (SMIs), is facing global challenges related to the capacity of human resources in the field of design and marketing.
“That inspired this activity that consists of two agendas, namely training on jewelry design and marketing for SMEs in the jewelry sector and comprehensive mapping for industrial jewelry in ASEAN,” he remarked.
Some 22 people from ASEAN member countries, such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand, are attending the training that is being held on November 20-27, 2023.
Pawowo said this training is part of the ECOTECH Work Programme that focuses on providing training and cooperation in the field of capacity building to help ASEAN members benefit from global trade.
In addition, he said, the training aimed to develop institutional and personnel capacity in accordance with respective economic potentials.
